This is the second post i'm writing about skincare showing that skincare is a very prolific field, barriers are relatively reduced and you can start small by producing small quantities. Skincare products can be developed for different usages : beauty industry, healthcare.
The skills level needed to access the industry depend on the problem you are trying to solve, you may develop a skincare product with no specific knowledge but you will need advanced engineering and R&D to design and produce sophisticated solutions needed in the market. Some of the products developed are simply digital and helping customers understand or choose their skincare routine, so you may never need to go to a wet lab to access this market as an entrepreneur.
There is a lot of ways startups innovate in this field, those are some perspective from which entrepreneurs see the skincare market:
1-appearance
2-culture: traditional or ethnic knowledge
3-age
4-personalization
5-ingredients sourcing: insects, ocean plants,
6-skin type or color: sensitive, black,
7-usage: travelers.
Appearance - facial oil
On the 12 July 2021, downtown partnership of Baltimore published an article announcing NKVSKIN as one of the BOOST incubator program inaugural class members, which is a program that attract and support black-owned retail business in downtown Baltimore neighborhoods. NKVSKIN is a facial skincare oil that improve the skin's appearance and treat common concerns such as acne, hyper-pigmentation and eczema.
Appearance - bio-fabrics
On the 19 July 2021, Procter & gamble ventures studio published an article announcing NANOSPUN TECHNOLOGIES as the winner of the innovation challenge with US$10,000 prize, i first sow this in a movie THE WOLVERINE, when VIPER tear here skin, but i did not know that this exist in real.
NANOSPUN TECHNOLOGIES develops and produces disruptive, first-of-its-kind, live-active biological tissues for skincare. The tissues includes bacteria, yeast, algae, plant cells, and mammalian cells.
Culture - African culture
On the 28 August 2021, new voices foundation tweeted PHOLK BEAUTY as a winner of the pitch competition with US$15,000 prize, PHOLK developed skincare products based on African healing and herbalist traditions for African.
Age - anti aging
On the 5 August 2021, invest southwest published an article announcing AESTHETICS BIOMEDICAL as one of the finalists of the VENTURE MADNESS competition growth track. AESTHETICS BIOMEDICAL is offering SoME Skincare, a rejuvenating tropical anti-aging skincare product that uses a proprietary blend of ingredients combined by your physician with your own platelet rich plasma (PRP) to give you a truly personalized cosmetic experience.
Personalization - Algorithmic skincare:
On the 14 July 2021, xrc labs published a video on YouTube presenting MXT, a startup active in the retail technology and consumer goods sector and developing a skincare personalization web-app that let users choose or help define the best formula for their skin care routine using probably a database of ingredients and a specific algorithm.
Personalization - Microbiome analytics:
On the 6 January 2022, Colgate-Palmolive published a story announcing DERMALA as the Colgate connect challenge US$20,000 grand prize. DERMALA uses the human microbiome and analytics to create personalized products for skin health and treatment of chronic skin conditions like acne, eczema and aging.
Personalization - DNA analysis
On the 6 January 2022, Colgate-Palmolive published a story announcing SKINDNA as the Colgate connect challenge second place with a US$15,000 prize. SKINDNA is developing a DNA collect and analysis technology with the aim of discovering specific skin care program based on skin genetics.
Ingredients sourcing - insect-derived
On 29 August 2022, FUTURPRENEUR published a press release announcing ALTRENE as a winner of the rbc rock my business startup awards with CA$10,000 award. ALTRENE sells 3 INSEKT products in it's website: cleanser, moisturizer and oil.
INSEKT use an insect derived extracts from the black soldier fly as ingredients in it's formulation.
Ingredients sourcing - Ocean plants based
On the 17 June 2021, VENTURE TARANAKI published an article announcing SOL+SEA as the winner of powerup ideas competition with NZ$10,000 prize. SOL+SEA use ocean plants like seaweed, kelp, algae and phytoplankton as ingredients.
Sensitive skin – irritant identification
On the 22 July 2021, western Michigan university published an article announcing TRANSPARENT BEAUTY COMPANY as the winner of the wendell christoff award, it's an e-commerce beauty retailer that focuses on helping customers pinpoint the ingredients that irritate their sensitive skin.
Sensitive skin - rash
On the 3 June 2021, BLACK GIRL VENTURES published a post about CURASALVE the equilibria bgv pitch competition first place winner an organic skincare company that produce an organic paste for diaper rash treatment.
Usage - Travel skincare
On the 9 April 2021, WBENC (women's business enterprise national council) published an article announcing BLACKTRAVELBOX as the CAPAX smart tank pitch competition second place winner with US$2,500 cash prize, BLACKTRAVELBOX is travel kit offering hair and skincare products with a travel-friendly packaging and formulations.
BLACKTRAVELBOX also won the first annual BIPOC pitch competition as tweeted by DENVER STARTUP WEEK on the 6th of October 2021.
