Brief:

Species targeted for aquaculture in this post : red tilapia, salmon, shellfish, Atlantic blufin tuna, shrimp.

Innovation and research development efforts are in :

- disease residue clean-up,

Salmon

Feed ingredient for farmed salmon

On the 8 June 2021, EIT FOOD (European institute of innovation and technology) published a post announcing CEWATECH as one of SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE COMPETITION winners, CEWATECH is a fish feed for salmon that contains protein from recycled wastewater in the starch industry.

CAWATECH aim to replace the use of fish-meal and soybean meal.

Land based salmon farming

On the 8 June 2021, EIT FOOD (European institute of innovation and technology) published a post announcing JUST ADD WATER as one of SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE COMPETITION winners, JUST ADD WATER is a project lead by FISHFROM LTD, according to their website they are developing a technology for land based salmon farming.

JUST ADD WATER project will include many components :

- recirculating aquaculture systems,

- ideal growing conditions,

- powered by renewable energy,

- sustainable fish feed,

- data systems,

The goal is to replace sea cage and provide predictable high quality supply of fresh salmon.

Shellfish

On the 8 June 2021, EIT FOOD (European institute of innovation and technology) published a post announcing DELTA FUTURO as one of SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE COMPETITION winners, DELTA FUTURO is a shellfish farming system with the goal of scaling up hatcheries and improving seed availability for farmers.

DELTA FUTURO wants to respond to the lack of high quality manila clams.

Atlantic blufin tuna

On the 8 June 2021, EIT FOOD (European institute of innovation and technology) published a post announcing NEXT TUNA as one of SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE COMPETITION winners, NEXT TUNA is a project that seek to reproduce Atlantic blufin tuna in a land-based recirculating aquaculture system.

According to their website, they will plan and build the first qua farm to breed Atlantic blufin tuna. They targeting a USD 40 billion market with the goal to provide a sustainable source of this specie in growing demand.
