It's known that in agriculture, the nature of the work is low skilled, now technology is changing the job description, a time may came when only a qualified engineer will be able to remotely operate the software, IoT equipment and installations in a farm.
We gonna take a look at the beef industry, to see how startups are trying to solve some problems faced by farmer, like pasture optimization, phenotype analysis and artificial insemination.
Pasture management:
For ranchers, a pasture management program is key to success, it can help maintain a healthier pasture ecosystem, extend grazing season and improve soil fertility. However fence moving is hard work, that require the rancher to be on the pasture and move the fences periodically.
Corral Technologies is a startup that wants to change that, allowing ranchers to move virtual fences remotely from their phones. This software will help ranchers increase pasture utilization and reduce rent, they will access more data records and metrics allowing them to forecast and create grazing plans.
On the 20 April 2021, the university of Nebraska Lincoln published an article announcing Corral Technologies as a winner of new venture competition 2021, the startup won 25,000USD.
More profitability with data:
beef producers have cattle record books, where they keep their data. BLACK BOX CO is transforming this process, farmers can now upload an excel file to a web-app connected to a cloud database, collecting supply chain and production raw data and allowing access to metrics, analysis and decision making.
On the 6 May 2021, beef Australia published an article announcing BLACK BOX CO as the winner of 2021 beef pitch in the paddock, they won 10,000AUD.
Animal reproduction technology:
An other way to improve profitability in dairy and beef industry is to boost conception rates, but how? Dyneval, a biotechnology startup found a solution to this problem, they developed an instrument that simplify semen assessment.
It's a small portable box connected to an app that can be used by cattle vets and artificial insemination technicians for semen testing before artificial insemination or bull soundness examinations.
On the 27 May 2021, an article was published by Scottish edge announcing Dyneval as the winner of 100,000GBP award sponsored by the industrial biotechnology innovation centre (IBioIC).
We can conclude with a question! how profitable a farm that use the three technologies would be?
